European Meander 2023 Day 1

Our decision to take this trip was based on two basic points of interest. Our daughter is running in the Berlin Marathon, Sept 24th, and we had a special deal on a Cruise in October (with another couple). With 10 days in between the two events and our commitment to travel the world (or Europe, over and over and over!!) we set out to make another Meander, this time in Europe. So here’s the start… we paid United for a flight to Frankfurt which turned out to be for Lufthansa which turned out to be on Eurowings Discovery Airline (owned by Lufthansa). Go figure, is anything easy any more. The seats were inches apart, I’m 5′ 4″ and I was up to my knees from the seat in front of me. No way anyone over 6′ is getting in that seat. But still, good flight, fare food, no issues.

After a nine hour flight (4 or 5 hours of sleep), you make it through passport control, gather the luggage and make your way to the express (sort of) train to the Frankfurt Haubtbanhoff (main train station), what do you want to do? We’re only here for one night, let’s head into town!! We walked along the Main River and over to the Roemer Platz. Notice the picture above, pretty typical of the architecture in Frankfurt, but I noticed something… next picture please.

This is a close up of the picture above… I was trying to figure out why the large police presence in the square and on the streets around the square. Come to find out the Aberdeen football club was playing against Frankfurt today and they were getting ready for crowd control.

Everywhere we looked there were red/orange Aberdeen jerseys … It was like being back in Scotland. They all seemed happy… I approached a group in the restaurant where we had lunch, they were pleased to let me take a photo. They wished Erica well on her marathon Sunday and went back to their celebrations.
