European Meander – The Ancients

European Meander – The Ancients
First we had to get there

Although we spent time in Rome and Crete, I’ll post our visits to Pompeii and Ephesus. These turned out to be highlights of this period of travel because it gave a rare view of life 2000 years ago. Starting with Pompeii. Established in the 8th century BC it was a resort town. I was surprised that the excavations didn’t start until the 18th century AD, 1748. Archeologists noticed that city was virtually intact, which was quite a surprise.

This is an amphitheater as you enter the site. It is next to the civil buildings.

I should probably keep my ranting to a minimum, but we had to do Pompeii on a tour. Now the tour guide was great but once again dealing with the crowds really detracted from the trip. Most of the time we were fighting to see or just take a picture. There was no time to explore and most of the information we got was information we could have gotten from a web site. It really detracted from the trip. It would have been hard to get out to the site on our own, but it might have been a better experience. Here are some of the pictures –

Below is a set of bones that were discovered in this house. The people died from CO2 poisoning. I’ll post some other pictures, as well as some from Ephesus, but at the moment I’m about to lose my internet connection.
