European Meander – Luzern & The Alps

Whatever you’ve heard about the Alps is totally wrong. The reason? There is no way in the English language (or any other language) to describe the Alps. I’m not going to try, I’ll just say come on over, it’s worth it.

We arrived in Luzern, checked into our hotel room and since it was already afternoon just took a walk around the “old” city. Again, as in Bern, it’s so well preserved. No WWII history except to provide a refuge. The city is a little more Disney like then Bern, especially with the tourists appearing from every corner, every crevice all looking to do the same stuff at the same time. But once you get over that and you just grab a sidewalk table at a bakery your perspective changes.

That was last night. This is today. We bought tickets that allowed us a journey up 6953ft and look back on Luzern. Then when you have your perspective you can look up at the alps. I’ll do this backwards and show the end result before I talk about how we got there… Check it out

Luzern from 6000+ ft

Go to the other side of the platform and you are looking at the Alps. The Eiger is somewhere to the right.

We were surprised when we got to the top, which by the way requires a physical climb up quite a few stairs (if your lucky). We saw a sign telling us how far away Havana Cuba was, as I peered around the sign there was Tampa Bay. Of all the cities you could choose, they had a sign for Tampa. Go figure

Actually it’s a Sunday day out for so many of the locals. They head up there to have a walk around. Lots of tourists but an amazing number of locals. We also saw some locals walking up on the trails next to the train.
