The Great Meander #1

The Great Meander #1

Our first post is a concept, the “meander”. So many people are going some place, or have to be somewhere. Glenda and I decided, even though we also have to be somewhere in a week we should take some time to Meander. We scheduled some stops but basically we decided no interstates unless we couldn’t avoid it and no reservations unless we couldn’t avoid them. Just take off and see what we can see. That was four days ago and we did have someplace to be, our son is now a company commander and we wanted to attend his change of command ceremony. So we set off for Tallahassee for the first night, attended the ceremony the next day and now we are meandering north.

Apart from the breath of fresh air we are getting from seeing the communities, farms, homes and businesses that make up the country, we are also noticing a major lack of traffic. Most of America is over on the Interstate speedway, vying for the pole position, swerving in and out of traffic for the 40 foot advantage, taking chances they wouldn’t normally take because there’s no way anything will happen to them (other people are killed in traffic fatalities, not them). It has been very pleasant just to be able to see little towns and hamlets… the rail lines moving product… it’s less stressful but it’s also slower.

Take a minute to slow down, see the other half of America. We’re finding people who are friendly, for no other reason than they happen to be friendly (what’s up with that??). Some guy was out moving the grass along they way, he looked up as we were passing through his little town and waved at us with a smile. What’s wrong with that guy??? How do you respond? Well, we waved back and smiled. Made us feel human, like part of the continuum. We are noticing one thing, all the businesses that are closed up, boarded up, out of business. So sad to see, every little town has it. Anyway, come back and check out the trip. We hope to have pictures, insights, rants and recommendations. I have to figure out how to do it first… that’s the challenge.

Open highway, ever seen one. Kind of hard figuring out what to do here, there were no cars. Where did they all go???
