On to Bergen, where our cruise actually begins. Having left Gudvangen behind we hopped a bus to Vos and a train to Bergen. But first a word about boats, or ships or watercraft and the like.
The above craft is an electric ship, it takes people from Flam to Gundvangen. Below the deck forward are a series of batteries (these are huge, not your 12 volt batteries strung together). The same type and number are under the stern. They act as ballast and power.
The two “cords” hanging from the tower are the charging station. Each trip the ship makes the “plugs” are attached and the batteries are charged.
Norway is very conscious of the consequences of diesel engines on the fjords. This year they will stop anything not electric from operating in certain areas. Not sure how that will work with the cruise ships that dock in Flam, that this is what I’ve been told.
And on to Bergen
This last image is just an example of all the wood buildings and houses. It’s a very nice feel everywhere you go.
